April is #AlcoholAwarenessMonth in the U.S.—a time to reflect and reaffirm our collective commitment to fostering responsible drinking. It’s also an opportunity to recognize the rise of lower- and non-alcohol options and the spirits industry’s commitment to catering to a broader range of consumer needs.
#WorldSpiritsAlliance members’ lower- and non-alcohol drinks give consumers more flexibility when socializing and diverse options for those seeking balance and moderation: if one doesn’t feel like having a full-strength spirits drink—or doesn’t feel like having any alcohol on that occasion—there are other exciting choices that still offer a sense of a special moment and celebration. Many WSA members have been expanding their portfolios to support evolving consumer preferences.
But for those who are choosing to sip on their favorite cocktail or any other alcohol beverage, it’s essential to understand that no type of alcohol is inherently better for health than another and that #ModerationMatters.
All alcohol beverages contain the same pure alcohol: ethanol. No alcohol beverage has a monopoly on moderation, whether it’s beer, wine, or spirits, what matters most is how much and how often it’s consumed—not the product itself.
That’s why WSA and its members remain committed to encouraging moderation. It does this by supporting global efforts to promote safer drinking practices through education and choice to ensure adults who choose to consume alcohol #DrinkResponsibly
Spirits offer particular versatility for consumers; for example, cocktail recipes can be tailored by using less alcohol or by adding low-calorie mixers, making them a flexible option for those looking to moderate. This April, and every month, remember that moderation is a behavior, not a beverage.
