IARD’s Releases Progress Report on Alcohol Consumption and Alcohol-Related Harm

Case Study

The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking (IARD) has published a timely report highlighting encouraging progress against targets set by member states on UN Sustainable Development Goals and in the WHO Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol. This progress report provides an overview of trends in alcohol consumption and key indicators of alcohol-related harm across member states using WHO data from 2010–2019. Key findings include:

➡️113 countries (62% of those with available data) are on track or have already met the target to reduce harmful drinking, according to at least one indicator.
➡️The strongest progress is in reducing alcohol-attributable mortality, which fell by 20.2% between 2010 and 2019, with 103 countries meeting or on track to meet the 2030 target.
➡️While alcohol-related harms (mortality and morbidity) are declining, reductions in average per capita consumption and heavy episodic drinking are less widespread – underscoring the importance of measuring harm holistically.

The World Spirits Alliance and its members stand ready to support the outcomes of the 2025 UN High‑Level Meeting that will further the UN’s goal of reducing harmful drinking by 2030. For a deeper-dive on the findings and data sources, read the full report here.
