2025 High-Level Meeting on noncommunicable diseases: Alcohol and health trends by country based on WHO data

Responsibility

IARD published a report beginning of 2025 on countries’ progress on reaching the UN’s goal of reducing harmful drinking by 2030. This report is set to inform UN member states on alcohol and health trends by country based on the WHO’s latest data in view of the UN High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) in September 2025. This HLM will be the most significant opportunity before 2030 to work towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in public health. IARD underlines the necessity and effectiveness of the UN’s whole-of-society approach to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. The effectiveness of joint efforts is clear by looking at the drop of global alcohol-attributable mortality rates and how they decreased by 20% from 2010 to 2019, according to WHO data.
